An anomaly may be identified as a local deviation from a regional trend. In potential fields interpretation, it is a feature or shape which stands out on a map or profile of the gravity or magnetic field.  This feature is of shorter wavelength or steeper gradient than the regional or ambient field.  This feature would correlate to a geologic structure or lithology contrast, such as faults, anticlines, synclines, intrusions, salt masses, reefs, buried channels, etc.
